Beautiful Ebony in stock!
August 16, 2013

One of the real pleasures of custom building is the opportunity to use an incredible variety of beautiful woods.

Each one has its own personality, tone, and 'vibe', and they all have something really great to say.

We just received a small supply of really lovely Ebony back/side sets, with a striking mix of black and brown streaks that will yield a very dramatic back.

This wood is fully dried and very stable, with a glassy and brilliant tap tone that should contribute sparkle and clarity, along with a solid and well-defined fundamental.

We've used ebony like this before and have always been very pleased with the results!

Veillette Macassar Ebony backs

These sets are a little on the small side, so they are only available for Merlin, Gryphon, or Flyer instruments.

If you've been waiting for that special set of wood to set your Veillette apart, now is your chance - we don't expect this to last long,

and we might not see more of it anytime soon.

Keep your eyes on this page for some more wood features in upcoming weeks - we've got some nice stuff hidden away that we're starting to offer for new builds...

Flyer Basses - reviewed this month in Bass Player!
July 24, 2013

The rave reviews continue on our Flyer series of instruments!

This month's Bass Player features a pair of Flyer 4-string basses, fretted and fretless.

These basses have a unique mix of acoustic and electric personalities, and BP's Brian Fox had some really nice things to say about them...

New Doubleneck in Italy...
July 16, 2013

We never get tired of new Doublenecks, and this is in many ways the most complex one we've made yet!

This was custom-built for a client in Italy, who is thrilled with the result and already exploring the musical possibilities...

Veillette Doubleneck Acoustic Guitar

This instrument features a standard-tuned 6-string "lower' neck, paired with a 12-string Merlin "upper" neck.  The shared E-E tunings let both necks resonate sympathetically with one another, creating an ethereal and ambient texture that really adds an extra dimension, even with simple playing.

Alongside all this acoustic complexity, this guitar also features a polyphonic pickup system with MIDI-ready output on the 6-string neck, and full MIDI patch control onboard.

We're really looking forward to seeing what the new owner will create with this inspiring musical tool...every Doubleneck has pulled new ideas and approaches from the players that have picked them up.

Here's a quick video from the shop, for a quick taste of what this guitar can do:

Acoustic Guitar raves about the Flyer 14...
June 18, 2013

Our Flyer guitars have been catching eyes and turning heads everywhere they go.

The latest This month's Acoustic Guitar magazine features a great review of our Flyer 14, very nicely written by Adam Levy.

Here are some highlights:

"I can't think of another acoustic guitar that I've found so easy to cradle...every note in the chords spoke sweetly and articulately...I could elicit honeyed warbles or hellhound growls from the Flyer by varying my touch and technique...a forward-thinking design, solidly executed."

A truly magical Merlin...
May 8, 2013

When this guitar was done with assembly and setup, we all took a minute to stop and admire it.  It's really a uniquely beautiful instrument.

This is a Merlin 12 with a whole lot of extra goodness -

-Bearclaw top with a vivid transparent blue stain

-Intensely multicolored and figured Maccassar Ebony back, sides, fingerboard, bridge, and headpiece

-Curly maple binding with arm and waist bevels

-Side soundport

-Ultra-light Gotoh "Stealth" tuners

Weighing in at 2 lbs 15 ounces, this guitar responds to the slightest touch - and can also take the heaviest strumming without giving up.

From mandolin "chop" to delicate fingerstyle sparkle, it retains a refined and powerful voice.

We'll be very sad to see this one go!  It's got loads of personality and some of the most gorgeous ebony we've ever seen.
